Magickal Herb Friday: Sage

Sage is a shrubby, evergreen perennial plant with pale green leaves. Beautiful purple flowers are borne in summer.  Adding sage to your garden is a wonderful way to attract hummingbirds.

Sage has many cullinary uses.  It has a strong flavour that increases when the herb is dried.  When cooking, use sparingly to flavour meats and note that it will aid in the digestion of fatty meats.
Tea made from sage leaves is an antiseptic nerve and blood tonic.  It can aid in irregular menstrual periods and menopause.

Sage is a very important herb in a Witch’s garden.  When used as a smudge stick, it is used to cleanse and purify spaces and to clear out negative energies.

In Witchcraft, sage is also used in spell work for purification, protection, wisdom, longevity, and wishes.

How to Make Your Own Smudge Sticks
- White Sage
- other herbs you wish to add
- natural cotton sting/hemp

Know your intent!  Why are you smudging? You may want your tie colour to correspond with your intent.  Making your smudge sticks can be a ritual itself.  Harvest your herbs in a sacred manner.  As you wrap your sage (and other herbs), be aware of what energies you are putting into it. Feel the thread bind the magick (your intent) into your bundle.  Thank the Goddess for the abundence bestowed upon you.

1 Thoughts:

  1. Is there any other herb which can help in repelling negative energies? In India, we don't find sage, but I have "tulsi" or Indian basil which my mother worships. Touching it always makes me happy... but I do not know if it's possible to make something out of it, the leaves are tiny.
