44 Days of Witchery: Witchy tools - Athame

 An Athame is one of the Wiccan tools used in rituals.  It is a double-edged knife that is a phallic symbol, attributed to the God and the element of Fire.  It is a tool of command used in the control, direction and manipulation of energies and to charge and consecrate objects.  Witches use their Athames to cast their circles and possibly to command spirits.  It is important to note that the Athame should never be used to cut physical objects. 

You do not need an Athame to practice the Craft.  If you are uncomfortable with the thought of using a sharpened blade in your practices (or you have children present), you may choose to keep your blade dull or perhaps use a wand, a stick or even your finger.  When not in use, your Athame should always be sheathed.

Your Athame should never be used in battle or as self-defense.  Using a ritualistic tool in this manner can be likened to a Catholic Priest using the Communion Chalice to drink beer at the local pub -- a big no-no!


Consecration of an Athame

If your practices require you to cast a circle, do so now. 
Light incense of your choice, a candle.
Have a small down of purified water and a bowl of salt ready.
Before these assembled spirits I bring this Athame to be dedicated to the service of the Lady and Lord.
 Pass athame three times through smoke of the incense.
 By the power of air, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to purity of thought and to harmlessness that all intentions for which thou art used may harm none and be for the good of all.
Pass tool three times through or over the flame of the fire candle.

By the power of fire, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to purity of desire and to harmlessness that all goals which thou doest help achieve may harm none and be for the good of all.
 Take a few drops of water and sprinkle or dab on instrument.
 By the power of water, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to purity of emotion and to harmlessness that all that thou shalt be used in a spirit of harmony, harming none and for the good of all.

Touch instrument to the stone or salt in north quarter

By the power of earth, be thou purified. Be thou dedicated to steadfastness and purity of purpose, that my will be achieved without wavering, with harm to none and for the good of all.
Present your consecrated Athame to the Lord first, then the Lady.
Be sure to close your circle if you have cast one.

KWW: Tea Breads

While surfing around for inspiration this morning, I stumbled across these two recipes... I think I might have to give them a go :)

Lavender Tea Bread
Ingredients:
3/4 cup milk
2 Tbsp. dried lavender flowers, finely chopped, or 3 Tbsp. fresh chopped flowers
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
6 Tbsp. butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs

Grease a 9x5x3 inch loaf pan.
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Heat milk with lavender almost to a boil, then steep until cool.
Mix flour, baking powder and salt together in bowl.
In another bowl cream butter and gradually add sugar, then eggs, one at a time, beating until light and fluffy.
Add flour mixture alternately with lavender milk, in three parts. Mix until batter is just blended, do not overbeat.
Pour into prepared pan and bake for 50 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool in pan 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool.
When completely cool, drizzle with a simple sugar glaze or sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. Garnish with sprigs of fresh lavender.



Sage Tea Bread
Ingredients:
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons minced fresh sage or 2 teaspoons dried sage
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

In a small saucepan, heat milk and sage just until warm. Set aside to cool.
In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk mixture.
Pour into a greased 9x5x3" loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack.

Blessed Imbolc

Imbolc has arrived!  To celebate the return of the Sun, here is a wonderful recipe:

Honey Bars

Ingredients:
1 cup margarine
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup honey
1 cup sour milk* (see below)
2 Tablespoons vinegar
6 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon mace
1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon


Steps:

Prepare sour milk and mix dry ingredients. Set both aside.
Cream margarine and sugar, add egg, beat until light. Add honey, sour milk and vinegar.
Mix thoroughly. Chill one hour.
Roll out to 1/4" thickness. Cut into 2"x3" rectangles and place on buttered cookie sheets.
Bake at 375° for 6 minutes. Frost with plain vanilla frosting or sprinkle with icing sugar.

* For sour milk, add 1 T. vinegar to 1 c. milk and let stand for 10 minutes.
