The Black Cat

Every true witch needs a black, right??
Well, meet Onyx; the newest addition to our household.
Little Onyx is quite the mischevious one - he is into everything... I am dreading the day he discovers the herb cabinet!!

So what is it about black cats that associated them with witches??
It is believed that our furry little friends are a wtich's familar or even a witch incarnate! These superstitions started in the middle ages and believe it or not, still continue today.

What exactly is a familiar?
A familiar, according to is a demon or supernatural being supposedly attending a witch, often said to assume the form of an animal. While many Christians (or non-pagans) believe that a witch's familiar is a demon in disguise, this is quite the contrary... familiars are more like a mini Pagan guardian angel concept. He or she can often be the witch's closest companion, offering moral support, special knowledge, and/or physical healing. Familiars are even said to have powers of their own.

Why a black cat??
Have you ever wondered why a black cat is a stereotypical familiar representation? Why not an ordinary tabby or an orange cat? The answer is quite simple... cats are generally noctural by nature. During the Burning Times (and thereafter), it became necessary to keep witchcraft hidden, and black cats, due to their ability to remain unseen in dark places and at night, were considered especially desirable partners for witches.
