I was going to post this onto my Facebook Page, but I thought I would put it here instead. While surfing on Facebook, I came across a post by Patti Wigington at About.com's Pagan/Wiccan section.

Go ahead, pop over and read it... I'll wait right here.

Wow... what do you even say to someone that is that narrow-minded?? I was completely flabergasted at the ignorance of the mayor. Now, since becoming Wiccan, I have learned to be much more tolerant of other's views, but this seems down right wrong. And I am sure that Mayor Bob Butler is not the only one sharing these views... but it is sad. It really is.

The Wort Moon

Through-out my readings, I have discovered discrepancy between the monthly moon names. I generall refer to the August full moon as the Wort Moon or Wyrt Moon. "Wort" is an old-age word meaning "Plant". Now is an opportune time to converse with the Green Man. You may also come across "Sturgeon Moon"; named for the large fish of the Great Lakes region since the vast majority of fish caught at this time are sturgeon. Sometimes this moon may be refered to as the Red Moon from the redish colour it may emit as it rises through the haze. Some Wiccans also call the August moon the Green Corn, Grain Moon or Barely Moon. Monthly lunar names are associated with your georgraphic location and/or the path you follow. Whatever you may call the moon this month, may the Goddess shower her blessings upon you!

  • Gemstones: Tigers eye, carnelian, garnet, red agate
  • Trees: Cedar and hazel
  • Gods: Vulcan, Mars, Nemesis, Hecate, Hathor, Throth
  • Herbs: rosemary, basil, rue, chamomile
  • Element: Fire

An interesting fact, according to EarthSky.org the August 2010 full moon is the smallest, farthest full moon of the year. It lies more than 252,000 miles away, in contrast to the moon’s average distance of about 239,000 miles.

"There's a few things I've learned in life: always throw salt over your
left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for
good luck, and fall in love whenever you can"
--William Shakespeare

Lavender is one of my favourite herbs. I am harvesting some of the buds from my herb garden today. I generally try to wait until a full moon or Sabbat to do so, but this plant was in a hurry and would not wait. I must say though... my kitchen smells heavenly! Lavender has such a calming effect.

Magickal Properties: Lavender is a masculine herb, it's ruling planet is Mercury and Air is it's element. It is best known for its properties of contentment, balance, love, sleep and good health. Use it when any of these aspects is required. Because of the amazing scent to the flowers, lavender is often combined in light potpourris for keeping a home in balance or in sachets under pillows to promote good dreams and peaceful sleep.

Recipe: Lavender Mint Tea
-1 teaspoon fresh lavender flowers or 1/2 teaspoon dried lavender flowers
-1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves or 2 teaspoons dried mint
-1 cup boiling water
-honey (to taste - optional)

In a teapot, combine the lavender flowers and mint.
Pour boiling water over the mixture; steep 5 minutes.
Yield: 1 cup.

Sweet Dreams Sleep Sachet
  1. Mix any or all of the following mugwort, rose petals, lemon balm, flax seed, lavender buds, catnip, valerian and peppermint together in a bowl.
  2. Plan to sew three sides together, leaving the top of the bag open, if you're making the bag. Make seams by folding 1/2 inch under on each side and sew together.
  3. Stuff herbal mixture inside bag. Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
  4. Gather the top of the bag together and tie tightly with ribbon. If desired, you may sew the top of the bag and create a pillow instead.
  5. Place sachet under your pillow.

On Facebook??

So it's been ages since I've written here... my apologies.
Things have been hectic around home.

To my readers that are still with me, how many of you are on facebook? I am considering putting up a Facebook fan page... once I get back into the swing of things here that is. I think it's worth looking into.
